Penny Orloff was a working actor and dancer in Los Angeles when a Juilliard opera scholarship took her to New York. Of her performance in the Juilliard Opera Theater’s LA TRAVIATA, the New York Times said: “Penny Orloff… assured and excellent in every way.” Following graduation, she sang more than 20 Principal Soprano roles in seven seasons with New York City Opera.

Her repertory has ranged from the Baroque to world-premieres of 20^th century works, notably her performance in Gian-Carlo Menotti’s final opera, JUANA LA LOCA, opposite Beverly Sills at New York City Opera. Among many memorable experiences at NYCO, singing the role of Frasquita opposite the final CARMEN of Victoria de los Angeles stands out as a highlight. Favorite operatic roles include LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR; Mozart’s Susanna, Fiordiligi, Donna Anna, and Madame Goldentrill in THE IMPRESSARIO; Verdi’s Gilda in RIGOLETTO and Violetta in LA TRAVIATA; and Amahl’s Mother.

Symphony, recital, and opera engagements have taken her all over the United States, Europe, and the former Soviet Union.  She has recorded for Vox-Turnabout, Warner-Nonesuch, Protone, and Original Cast Records.
